Our museum café

Treat yourself to a delicious meal under the glass cone or on the sun terrace

A trained barista provides fragrant, freshly prepared coffee specialties in our colorful and bright museum café. Enjoy the daily alternating lunch offer, fresh sandwiches and delicious take-away treats in a jar. The team at our café cooks all the dishes fresh and offers a varied separate range for allergy sufferers in addition to vegan delicacies. Of course organic, regional, “handmade” and with a lot of love for delicious food and great ingredients. In summer you can make yourself at home on the café terrace with a view of the River Main. A visit to the café is possible at any time even without a visit to the museum. We look forward to seeing you!

Welcome to the Museum of Communication Frankfurt

The experts on the past, present and future of communication

In the multiple award-winning museum building on Schaumainkai, you will gain a comprehensive insight into the history of communication. Special features include the department of art and communication and the lively programme of the children’s workshop.

At the permanent exhibition “Media history|s retold!” you can experience the development of communication over an area of 2,500 sqm. With the help of groundbreaking inventions, interesting adventures and extraordinary fates, we span the spectrum from the cuneiform writing tablet to smartglasses.

On the 1st floor, next to the hands-on area of the children’s workshop, is the Forum – a showroom for smaller temporary exhibitions. On the 2nd floor, large temporary exhibitions are presented over an area of 550 sqm. A radio station is located on the roof of the museum, which every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month is open. Please check our calendar for the exact opening hours.

From the Federal Postal Museum to the Museum of Communication

The History of the Museum

The origins of the museum can be traced back to the relocation of the collection of the Reichspostmuseum in Berlin during the Second World War: in 1945, parts of the collection were transferred by American soldiers from Berlin to Hesse, where they formed the basis for the Bundespostmuseum, which opened in 1958. Housed in a Gründerzeit (Wilhelminian style) villa, the Bundespostmuseum was among the first museums on Frankfurt’s Schaumainkai – later to become the Museumsufer (Museum Embankment).

The new museum building with its attractive architecture was opened in 1990. The old villa was renovated from the ground up and houses the museum administration inside.

Transparency and openness

The Architecture of the Museum

The new museum building, designed by the Stuttgart architectural firm Behnisch & Partner, was opened in 1990. The main exhibition area was placed underground in the basement, so that the park-like old tree population around the old building villa was preserved. Nowadays, the villa houses the museum administration and the library; the new building houses the permanent and temporary exhibitions.

The modern, predominantly glass and aluminium building forms a charming contrast to the warm sandstone of the old building. The central element of the multi-award-winning building is the cut glass cone. The atrium below offers visitors a charming view of all floor levels. With its distinct transparency and openness, the architecture of the museum already conveys the theme of “communication” in an excellent way.

Accessibility

Welcome to the Museum of Communication Frankfurt!

We look forward to welcoming all visitors. Our building and its facilities are open to all. Therefore, we are continuously working on making the visit to the museum as barrier-free as possible for as many people as possible. Have lots of fun!

Anfahrt

There is a public car park for people with disabilities in front of the museum. The public space in front of the museum is paved with a standard, easily accessible surface. From the intersection of Schaumainkai and Schweizer Straße, there is a slight slope “down” to the museum.

You can find more information here: How to find us (PDF)

Zugang

Access to the museum building is via a ramp or a staircase with 9 steps (each approx. 11 cm high) and all levels can be reached via a language-assisted elevator.

Service

Our museum shop is located in the spacious reception area on the ground floor. The café can be found on the same level at the back of the building. The lockers, the toilet and a first aid room are located in the basement. A wheelchair and magnifying glasses can be borrowed if needed. Assistance animals are welcome.

Ausstellungen

A clear route and presentation, as well as easy-to-understand bilingual texts and many opportunities for interaction, enable all visitors to explore and understand our exhibitions individually or in groups. Trained staff, our communicators, will be happy to assist you with orientation in terms of content and space.

Barrierearme Vermittlung

We are an educational centre and try to facilitate new ways of looking at our subject matters with all our senses. Easy-to-understand language, suitable for your group, enables a museum experience that is as barrier-free as possible. You can find our barrier-free services here.

Eintrittspreis

A reduced entrance fee of €4 is charged for visitors with a 50% degree of disability or more. The accompanying person registered on the disabled person’s pass or a needed assistant is admitted free of charge.

Coding Adventures: big class

The woman sitting across from me in the compartment had golden dentures. Unfortunately, apricots quickly become bruised. A lot of things only begin tomorrow. Has everything been experimented with? Please use controlled vocabulary. And suddenly this thought comes to me: Madame Sosostris knows everything. The subtext speaks a very different language. How realistic is excitement? Will there be anything after the theater? Travelling is so pleasant because we have a small space in the transportation vehicles just for us, which we can fill up without hesitation.
