The collection documents the many aspects of historical development in postal services and telecommunications. When the Foundation was established in 1995, it was entrusted with the task of providing access to, collecting and presenting the “development of communication and the related financial, freight and passenger traffic in postal and telecommunication services”. As a result, the Museum Foundation has significantly expanded the areas of collection to include the wide spectrum of forms of communication in the past, present and future.
The Philatelic Archive documents the history of philately from the very first postage stamps to the latest special issues. Aside from valuable rarities and mint condition new editions, the collection includes original designs, die and plate proofs, colour trials, postal stationary, entires, printers’ blocks and cancellation stamps. The Philatelic Archive’s most famous item is a Two Pence ‘Post Office’ Blue Mauritius.
